Healthy Lifestyles

A local nurse answered some health questions for emme with questions from our readers:
I am only 22 and I have gray hairs!  Is it true that plucking will cause more to grow back?

Gray hair is hereditary!  Getting gray hair from stress is just a myth.  Plucking your gray hairs and more will grow back is also a myth.  If gray hair runs in your family and your parents and grandparents got it early in life, then you probably will too.

Varicose veins run in my family.  What can I do to prevent them?

The best advice I can give is wearing compression stockings.  You can get them at a medical store.  Don’t cross your legs when you sit and don’t keep your knees pressed up against a seat.  Also, exercise can help.  If you work at a job that has an excessive amount of sitting and standing, you are more likely to develop it.  An example of this is a teacher or hair dresser who stand for a longer periods of time.

What is the best way to get over a phobia?

If someone has a phobia, they must explore their reason for it.  They should see a counselor.  A phobia really isn’t a problem until it is impacting your day-to-day schedules.

How does marijuana affect our bodies?

It impairs your judgement.  It is a depressant and can react quickly.  It also can kill brain cells.  Most people do not know that it stores fat within your body.  This especially happens to  people who are overweight. The drug also takes a really long time to leave your system making you at risk to fail drug tests.

How effective are Vitamin C supplements when trying to fight away a cold?

Every immune system is different.  For some people it works very well, but for some it does not.

Is it really necessary for people to drink 8 glasses of water a day?

It is not necessary but it is healthy.  It keeps toxins from building within your body.

What would you consider a “super food”?

Spinach and peanut butter.  Peanut butter contains protein, energy, a little bit of fat (the good kind).  It does not contain that many carbohydrates.  It is a little bit higher in calories, but it is still good for you.
