Football 101 For Girly Girls

by Maryann Pisano on September 5, 2013

It’s football season!  But are you often puzzled by the game itself?  Physical education teacher Carolyn Collins helped Emme figure out the sport of football.  This is football 101 for girly girls!

*There are 11 players per side on the field during a game

Positions:

  • Quarterback
  • Offense
  • Running back
  • Wide Receivers
  • Tight Ends
  • Center
  • Line Men

The quarterback calls the play and begins the play.  Famous quarterbacks include Jay Cutler, Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, Dan Marino, and Joe Montana.  The media mostly highlights the quarterbacks.

Hike:  The center begins the play by giving the quarterback the ball.  From there, the quarterback decides what to play to run.  This is decided during the huddle.

Line of scrimmage:  Where the ball starts.

Touchdown:  To get a touchdown, the ball has to cross the line and get into the end zone.

Touch Down:  6 points

There are:

  • 4 quarters
  • They are 15 minutes each
  • There is a half time

Field Goal:

  1. If a touch down has been scored, a field goal is worth one point.
  2. If you are kicking a field goal, that is worth three points.
