6 Tips for Breast Cancer Prevention

by Maryann Pisano on October 8, 2013

1.  Avoid Becoming Overweight

Like any other health risk, having excessive weight can be a factor for breast cancer.  Avoid weight gain over time, especially after menopause.  Try to maintain a body-mass index of under 25.

2.  Eat Healthy

Going along with being overweight, eating the right foods and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can result in lowering your risk for breast cancer.  Avoid fatty foods, excessive amounts of carbs and sugar will reduce your risks.  Always choose veggies over unhealthy options!

3.  Work it Out!

Exercise, exercise, exercise!   Working out reduces your risk for breast cancer by 10-30 percent!  Breaking a sweat for at least 30 minutes a day will make a huge difference.

4.  Lay Off the Alcohol

Alcohol consumption can attribute to higher breast cancer odds.  Limit ALL forms of alcohol to no more than one drink per day.

5.  Don’t Smoke

Gross!  Smoking can cause a laundry list of health problems, and breast cancer is one of them.  Long-term smokers are at more of a risk.

6.  Breast Feed Your Babies

Women who breast feed their babies for at least one year are at a lower risk of getting breast cancer.
