Throughout late winter and spring, people across Chicago enjoy a special seasonal treat on Friday nights – the Chicago Style Pepper and Egg Sandwich! A city that is rooted in Catholicism, Chicago also has a thriving food culture. When immigrants from Catholic countries like Italy came to Chicago and opened up food stands and restaurants, they needed to find something to replace meat on Fridays during the season of Lent, when Catholics abstain from eating meat. Thus, the pepper and egg sandwich was born!
